1st Graders and Great Books

I love 1st graders. They are sooo cute! I laugh to myself all the time while I am teaching. (You can't always show you are laughing, it may break their cute little hearts.) Just a few of the funny things that occur day to day:
  • One little girl has a pedometer thing. Her family is having a contest to see who can walk the most. So...lately when she is at her desk she is kind of jogging in place while doing her work. It cracks me up.
  • I was recently told that the Statue of Liberty was a gift from "a state or something" named Florida.
  • For one sweet boy's spotlight the whole class heard a very detailed play by play of his trip to Disneyland. We are talking name of hotel, name of rides, description of rides, food eaten, feelings about the rides and the food.... it was pretty funny.
Also, I LOVE this author/illustrator: Mo Willems Check his stuff out. He has some great stuff for beginning readers... and the books are hilarious. I am reading, "There is a Bird on Your Head" to my class on Tuesday. I also love "Edwina, The Dinosaur Who Didn't Know She Was Extinct." And the pigeon book stories... and Knuffle Bunny.... I guess I just love all of his books.
